A Glorious Morning on Forest Lake
July 1997 The morning of July 6, 1997 may easily become my most memorable experience at Bolen's Point. When I awoke that morning around 5:15, several fog banks hovered over isolated parts of the lake. Around 6:00 a.m. with the temperature an unseasonably crisp 45 degrees, I was trolling around "The Beaver Lodge" in the northern part of the lake and heard the putt-putt sound of a small outboard in the distance. I looked around and soon saw another fisherman emerge from a fog bank near "The Submerged Rock". The scene was extremely captivating ... songbirds chirping along the shore, loons hollering in the distance, the sputtering of his motor, and seeing him pierce the fog.Fishing had not been good, but with images like this I didn't care whether I caught anything or not ... this was what vacationing in Canada was all about ... catching fish would only be icing on the cake!
After seeing this picture, Mom encouraged me to enter it into the Iowa State Fair photo competition. Unfortunately, the entry deadline had passed. Then -- for the next 3 years -- I couldn't find the negative (this was before digital cameras ... ha!).
August 2001 While going through some file folders this spring, I found the negative and then entered it into the Iowa State Fair photo competition. Much to my surprise ... among 2700+ photos submitted, it was chosen for display during the fair and received an Honorable Mention in the Places/Adult Color category along with 17 others.
THANKS MOM! :-)
P.S. My only regret is that I didn't troll over to the other guy and get his name. :-(
