INTRODUCTION
On August 22nd - 24th, 1997, David invited a couple of friends from work to join him for a long weekend (a short 3 days) of fishing at the cabin. Randy Evans and Luke Vogel are close Briggs colleagues and fellow golfers. Randy loves Canada and canoes the boundary waters each year with one or more of his 3 children. Fishing for walleye was a distinct change for him as he is accustomed to catching Northern Pike in the boundary waters. Luke, on the other hand, was more at home simply fishing for pan fish on the pond near his home.
RESULTS
Neither Randy nor Luke were disappointed. A successful fishing expedition depends as much on timing as it does skill and the group was fortunate to be at the lake when the fish were biting. On the first night, the fish seemed to be in a feeding frenzy ... everyone was catching fish hand-over-fist at dusk. While no "big" fish were caught, everyone had a great time -- Luke & Randy have much the same attitude as David ... it doesn't matter how many fish we catch or how big they are ... the scenery and wildlife are enough to fully satisfy a person's senses, emotions, and expectations.
In the pictures at right ... [1] Randy catches his first-ever muskie (and he was trying to do so!); [2] Luke's first fish -- a perch -- was smaller than what he'd catch on his pond at home; [3] Randy shows off a cowboy hat he saw hanging on a tree along the shore which we retrieved (and it fit him exactly); and [4] Randy & Luke display our catch for the weekend prior to eating them for dinner.
