| U.S. - CANADA BORDER CROSSING & PASSPORT INFORMATION
I've recently read conflicting information from several online bullitin board/forum posts regarding the need for a U.S. passport when entering Canada.
Here is my understanding of the situation ... [ I last checked May-04-2008 ]
There is a 'graduated' implementation of the new passport requirement depending upon whether you FLY or DRIVE. For example:
- If FLYING, you need a passport now to enter Canada and re-enter the U.S.
- If DRIVING, then you shouldn't need a passport until Jun 1, 2009.
Passports can take 6+ weeks to obtain. But I wouldn't be surprised if delays are encountered as the deadlines near. So ... if you plan to fish in God's Country, I suggest you submit your application early!
Be sure to check out the new Passport Card option. It's less expensive than a traditional passport, but has some limitations (e.g. excludes air travel; valid only for Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda).
DISCLAIMER: Take this information for what it's worth! ... If you have any doubt as to when you'll need a passport, I strongly encourage you to contact the appropriate authorities (see below to get the latest-and-greatest information). Or contact your camp/lodge host for their assessment of the situation.
